A growing area of Mobile County, Semmes is home to over 3000 residents.  Most of the homes in Semmes feature large lots in country subdivisions.  A variety of brand-new home developments, such as the D. R. Horton community on Torrington Place, are also available in Semmes.  Homes range from under $100,000 to approximately $300,000.

Semmes is well-known nationwide for the it large nurseries that produce azaleas, including numerous award-winning varieties that are sold throughout the country.  Thousands attend the Annual Semmes Azalea Festival, a charitable event sponsored by The Friends of Semmes.

The Semmes community became an incorporated city on May 2, 2011.  It is the 461st municipality in the State of Alabama.  Historically, Semmes Land Company formed near the railroad in the year 1900 and transported yellow Pine to other localities.  The community is named for Adm. Raphael Semmes and officer in the United States Navy during the 1800s.  Semmes School is the oldest continually used school in the state.  Nearby is a replica of Mount Pleasant Church, a quaint chapel used for special events.

A business friendly atmosphere is attracting new businesses to Sam's.  The community features the lowest city general sales tax in all of Mobile County.  In addition, there is no city property tax.

Mobile County Public Schools serve the families living in Semmes.
